Icelandic horses are long-lived and hardy. At the same time, they are known for their explosive acceleration and speed.
Perhaps the breed’s most unique feature is its tölt, a natural and fluid gait during which at least one foot always touches the ground. The tölt is an extraordinarily smooth four-beat gait, which allows the rider an almost bounce-free ride, even at 32 kmh.
It is said a rider can drink a pint while riding, without spilling a drop.
The rough Icelandic climate has made its horses especially hardy and adaptable. It can survive extreme cold, food shortages and volcanic eruptions.
